Ultrasound Retraining:
Physiotherapists, Emma Colson and Dr Donna Urquhart recently co-presented at a lecture evening for the Victorian branch of Sports Physiotherapy Australia (SPA). The night was a lecture and practical session on Ultrasound Retraining for 35 participants. Sonosite Australia sponsored the evening, with the Victorian representative of the company, Libby Amey providing five ultrasound machines to allow the participants to practice some of the skills needed to use ultrasound in a clinical setting within physiotherapy practice.
The use of ultrasound in physiotherapy practice is born from landmark research out of the University of Queensland illustrating that the low back pain population has an alteration in timing onset of the deep abdominal muscles (transversus abdominis(TA) in particular). Teaching patients with chronic low back pain how to recruit the TA is one part of the rehabilitation process. As the muscle is deep in the abdominal region, it can only be viewed with the use of diagnostic ultrasound.
